Mr. Snuggles

Mr. Snuggles isn't a real cat, but an app for the iPhone.

I'm about to head off to Afghanistan for six months and will be feline-less during that time.  I was looking for some kind of purr simulator and ran across Mr. Snuggles.  I tell you what... For a simulated purr, it's just as soothing as the real thing.

The obvious drawback is that you don't get the tactile enjoyment you normally get from stroking a real cat's fur.  But the simulated fur does react to your touch, so you can smooth it out or ruffle it up. One obvious plus is that you don't have to worry about cleaning a litter box.

Even though the app is designed for the iPhone, it works just as well on the iPad.  With the "2x" feature, you have an even bigger kitty to pet.

Divine Plan... Really?

I have three sisters.  All of us have divergent religious ideologies.  Kaye (the oldest) is Wiccan.  Shannon (next after me) is kind of ambiguous.  I think she mentioned Buddhism at one time.  Erin (the youngest and Shannon's twin) is Christian.

Last night Shannon, who is 21 weeks pregnant, went to the ER because she started bleeding.  The outlook doesn't look good.  She's fully dilated and it doesn't seem as if there's anything the doctors could do to halt the labor.

She and her boyfriend have been keeping the family up to date on the situation through posts on Twitter and Facebook.  The rest of us have been reposting these updates for the benefit of other family members.  As can be expected, there have been replies from friends along the line of "I'm praying for your sister and the baby" or "You and your family are in my thoughts."  These kinds of comments don't bother me.  What gets me is when the Evangelicals on Erin's wall start stating things like "I agree we don't know HIS plan we just have to trust HIS plan."

Divine plan?  Really?  What part could the death of a 21-week old fetus possibly have to play in ANY plan - divine or other?  And don't give me that "God needs another angel" bullshit.  I would prefer to have a healthy, active nephew, thank you very much.

And then there's my sister.  She's not exactly out of the woods yet.  While she's in a pretty good hospital (from what I understand), complications could set in that threaten her life as well.  While I'm not exactly close to my family, I don't want any of them dead, either.

Is there really any wonder why I'm not a Christian?

The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology

My parents had a copy of this exact edition of Robbins' "Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology" in the living room bookcase while I was growing up.  It followed me out of the house when I left for college.  I don't think they've even noticed it's missing...

Hipstamatic - Warsaw

The last stop on my recent business trip was to Warsaw, Poland. I arrived on a Saturday afternoon, so I had Saturday night and all day Sunday to walk around.

Hipstamatic - Bratislava

The second stop on my recent business trip was Bratislava, Slovakia.

Hipstamatic - Prague

I recently returned from a business trip to Prague, Bratislava, and Warsaw.  This was my fourth trip to Prague and Bratislava and my third to Warsaw.  While the trip was mostly for business, I still had an opportunity to get out some for a little sightseeing.

In the past, I carried around my Canon PowerShot to snap pictures during these trips.  This time around, I decided I was going to make my iPhone my camera of choice and snapped shots using the Hipstamatic app.

The trip so far...

I've been traveling this past week and my initial plan was to continue blogging while I was away from home.  Obviously, that hasn't happened.

The iPad Test

I'll be traveling for work over the course of the next couple weeks, so I'm going to attempt making posts along the way using the iPad. As with most things iPad-ish, not everything works the same when using the version of Safari that's loaded onto the thing as when using the version that's loaded onto my laptop.

I'll say one thing, though. It'll be interesting to see what autocorrected words I might not catch before publishing new entries.

Zoltor the Fortune Teller

For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by the fortune teller machines you see sometimes in arcades.  I think the last one I remember seeing in operation was in the entry lobby to the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, CA.  Come to think of it...  I might still have the fortune card from that visit somewhere...

Randy little goat, ain't he?

Spotted this over at Retrogasm.  Thought it might be the "Devil in Lace" that's mentioned on the cover, but I can't find any info on it.

Joyce!

It was a dark and stormy night.  (But isn't it always?)  As the lightning flashed, I could see the cat slinking on her belly across the floor trying to find someplace to hide from the inevitable crash of thunder she knew was coming.

Stair Dismount

Stair Dismount is a fun little application for the iPhone and iPad created by Secret Exit.  The premise of the game is that you have a virtual character, Mr. Dismount, who you can push off various high places - stairs, cliffs, ski lifts, airplanes.  As he falls and bounces off outcroppings, you rack up points by the number of fractured bones he receives and how many times he somersaults through the air.  Each bounce comes with a rather satisfying crunching sound.

Hipstapatic

There is a camera application you can buy for the iPhone called "Hipstamatic" which allows you to take photos which have a vintage feel to them.  There are several different lenses, films, and flashes available for purchase (all worth it, in my opinion) each of which produces a different effect on the photo.

I'm sure I'll be posting several of the photos I take using this application over the course of this blog.

The caption says it all...

Just what the world needs...

... another blog from another person who thinks they're a writer, right?

Well, I'm not going to make any claims to being a great writer or claim that my pen is mightier than the sword.  I readily admit to being a poor speller (albeit one who actually knows how to use a spell checker).  My grammar isn't the best, but I try.  At least I know the difference between "there", "their", and "they're" and when to use the correct form.  As for proper punctuation and sentence form... I can get into a bit of trouble on this front, but I know that you're supposed to put two spaces after a period, so my paragraphs should be a little easier to read than those of some folks.
